Sudan
The national flag of Sudan consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and black with a green triangle at the hoist. Red symbolizes the sacrifices made for independence, white represents peace and optimism, black reflects the country's name, which derives from the Arabic term 'Bilad al-Sudan' (Land of the Blacks), and green signifies Islam, agriculture and prosperity.
Sudan officially adopted its current national flag on May 20, 1970, replacing the earlier blue-yellow-green design used after independence in 1956. The present flag reflects the Pan-Arab colors and symbolizes the country's history, identity and aspirations.
