Nordic Council 2016
The Nordic Council uses the Nordic swan symbol, a stylized white swan with eight feathers on a blue field. The swan reflects the close connections among the Nordic countries and their shared commitment to dialogue, cooperation and a common regional identity. The eight feathers refer to the five Nordic countries and the three autonomous territories involved in Nordic cooperation. The simple blue-and-white design gives the emblem a recognizable appearance and represents a cooperative regional institution rather than a single nation.
The Nordic Council was established in 1952 as a forum for parliamentary cooperation among Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden; Finland joined in 1955. Its creation reflected a desire to strengthen practical ties in Northern Europe after the Second World War. Over time, the Council helped advance cooperation in areas such as travel, employment, social rights, culture and education. The Nordic Passport Union, developed in the 1950s, is an important example of wider Nordic integration. In 1971, the Nordic Council of Ministers was established as a separate body for intergovernmental cooperation. Today, the Nordic Council remains the parliamentary arm of official Nordic cooperation, bringing together elected representatives and facilitating discussion of shared challenges, including climate change, mobility and regional security.
