Greece
The national flag of Greece consists of nine blue and white horizontal stripes and a white cross on a blue canton. According to a widely accepted interpretation, the nine stripes represent the syllables of the Greek motto “Elefthería í Thánatos” (“Freedom or Death”), which was used during the Greek War of Independence.
The white cross symbolizes the Greek Orthodox faith, which has played a central role in the country's history and culture for centuries. The blue and white colors are commonly associated with the sky, the sea and the many Greek islands, representing freedom, hope and Greece's close connection to the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.
The current Greek flag was introduced during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire and gradually became the country's official national symbol during the 19th century. Different versions of the flag were used from 1822 before the well-known blue and white striped flag became established as the naval flag.
In 1978, it was officially adopted as the sole national flag of Greece. Today it represents the Greek nation, its long history, its democratic roots and its significant contribution to European civilization.
