Papua New Guinea
The national flag of Papua New Guinea is divided diagonally into black and red triangles. The black field features the Southern Cross constellation in white, while the red field displays a golden bird-of-paradise. The bird-of-paradise symbolizes national identity and freedom, the Southern Cross reflects the country's location in the Southern Hemisphere, red represents traditional tribal culture, and black symbolizes the Melanesian people.
Papua New Guinea officially adopted its current national flag on July 1, 1971, prior to gaining independence from Australia in 1975. The design was created by Susan Karike and combines traditional colors with important national symbols.
