Mercosur
The Mercosur flag represents regional integration and cooperation among South American countries. Its green field evokes the region’s natural landscapes and shared hopes for development. Four blue stars form the Southern Cross constellation, a familiar feature of the southern sky and a symbol of the countries’ geographic connection. A curved white line suggests a horizon and the forward-looking ambition of cooperation. The name MERCOSUR appears beneath the emblem, identifying the Southern Common Market. Together, the elements express a common regional identity while respecting the independence and diversity of its participating countries.
Mercosur, the Southern Common Market (Mercado Común del Sur), was founded on 26 March 1991 when Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay signed the Treaty of Asunción. Its original aim was to promote the free movement of goods and closer economic integration through a common market. The 1994 Protocol of Ouro Preto established Mercosur’s institutional framework and gave the bloc international legal personality. Over the following decades, Mercosur developed common trade arrangements, political dialogue and cooperation in education, mobility and social policy. Venezuela joined as a full member in 2012 but has been suspended since 2016. Bolivia completed its accession process in 2024 and entered a transition period to incorporate the bloc’s rules. Mercosur continues to evolve as a major regional integration project, although trade disputes and differences in national economic policies remain important challenges.

Mercosur is a South American regional integration bloc created to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen connections between its member countries. Its central objectives include facilitating trade, reducing barriers between participating economies, coordinating aspects of commercial policy and creating conditions for a more integrated regional market. Mercosur also provides a forum for dialogue on transport, customs, education, labour mobility and other cross-border issues. Its main decision-making bodies include the Common Market Council, the Common Market Group and the Mercosur Trade Commission. The Mercosur Secretariat is based in Montevideo, Uruguay. Unlike the European Union, Mercosur operates primarily through intergovernmental cooperation and consensus, and the pace of integration depends on agreements between its members. The bloc helps its countries engage collectively in regional and international economic discussions while maintaining their national sovereignty.
