Mauritania
The national flag of Mauritania features a green field with a golden crescent and star, bordered by red stripes at the top and bottom. Green symbolizes Islam, the dominant religion, gold represents the sands of the Sahara Desert and the nation's wealth, while the red stripes commemorate the sacrifices made for independence and national unity.
Mauritania officially adopted its original green flag with the crescent and star on April 1, 1959, shortly before independence from France. On August 15, 2017, two red horizontal stripes were added following a constitutional referendum to honor those who gave their lives for the country.
