The ASEAN flag represents solidarity, shared identity and cooperation among the countries of Southeast Asia. Its central emblem shows a bundle of yellow rice stalks within a red circle, surrounded by blue and white rings. Rice is a familiar symbol of life and prosperity throughout the region, while the bound stalks express the aspiration of Southeast Asian countries to work together in friendship and solidarity.

According to ASEAN's official symbolism, blue stands for peace and stability, red for courage and dynamism, white for purity, and yellow for prosperity. The flag combines these colors with a simple, recognizable emblem that reflects ASEAN's regional identity. The emblem traditionally depicts ten rice stalks, reflecting the ten-member configuration under which the current design became widely established; Timor-Leste subsequently joined ASEAN as its eleventh member in 2025.

1. Meaning of the Flag

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, when Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand signed the Bangkok Declaration. Its founders sought to strengthen regional cooperation, accelerate economic growth and social progress, and promote peace and stability in Southeast Asia.

ASEAN gradually expanded beyond its five founding members: Brunei Darussalam joined in 1984, Viet Nam in 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. Timor-Leste became the eleventh member in 2025. The ASEAN Charter, which entered into force in 2008, provided the association with a stronger institutional and legal framework. The ASEAN Community, formally established in 2015, is organized around political-security, economic, and socio-cultural cooperation.

Over the decades, ASEAN has become an important forum for dialogue among Southeast Asian governments and with external partners. Its work spans trade, connectivity, disaster management, education, public health and regional security, while decisions are commonly shaped through consultation and consensus.
