United States
The national flag of the United States, commonly known as the Stars and Stripes, consists of thirteen horizontal red and white stripes and a blue canton with fifty white stars. The thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies, while the fifty stars symbolize the fifty states. Red stands for valor and courage, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice.
The current 50-star flag was officially adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the fiftieth state. The first United States flag was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, a date now celebrated annually as Flag Day.
