Uruguay

The national flag of Uruguay features nine alternating white and blue horizontal stripes with the Sun of May in a white canton. The nine stripes represent the country's original departments, while the Sun of May symbolizes liberty, independence and the May Revolution of 1810.

Uruguay officially adopted its current national flag on July 11, 1830, shortly after gaining independence. The design was inspired in part by the flag of the United States, with the Sun of May added as a distinctive South American symbol of freedom.
