South Sudan
The flag of South Sudan combines black, red and green horizontal bands separated by narrow white stripes, with a blue triangle at the hoist containing a yellow star. Black represents the people of South Sudan, white represents peace, red honors those who died in the struggle for liberation, green represents the land, agriculture and natural resources, and blue represents the country’s waters and skies. The yellow star symbolizes the formation and resilience of South Sudan.
The design originated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement during the struggle for self-determination. It was used by Southern Sudan during the autonomous period and became the national flag when the Republic of South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011. Its status and symbolism are recognized under South Sudan’s constitutional and national flag framework.
