Northern Ireland

The flag most commonly associated with Northern Ireland in an official context is the Union Flag of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland currently has no separate official government flag. The historic Ulster Banner, featuring a red cross, a six-pointed star, the Red Hand of Ulster and a crown, was used by the former Government of Northern Ireland from 1953 to 1972 and remains widely recognized as a symbol of Northern Ireland in some sporting and cultural contexts.

The Ulster Banner was introduced in 1953 for the former Government of Northern Ireland. It was based on the arms granted to that government and incorporated traditional Ulster symbolism. When direct rule from Westminster began in 1972 and the former government was abolished in 1973, the banner ceased to have official governmental status. Today, the Union Flag is the official flag used by the UK Government in Northern Ireland, while the Ulster Banner continues to appear in various unofficial, sporting and cultural settings.
