Malta
The national flag of Malta consists of two vertical bands of white and red with the George Cross outlined in red in the upper hoist corner. White symbolizes peace and purity, red represents courage and sacrifice, while the George Cross honors the bravery of the Maltese people during World War II.
Malta officially adopted its current national flag on September 21, 1964, when it gained independence from the United Kingdom. The George Cross was incorporated after King George VI awarded it to the entire Maltese population in 1942 for exceptional courage during World War II.
